Woolworths' Channel Islands staff protest over redundancy pay

Employees at a Woolworths store in Jersey are petitioning after they discovered that they will not get the statutory redundancy payments to which their UK counterparts are entitled.

The 120 employees at the St Helier store are not entitled to statutory redundancy pay [subscription required] because UK laws, including employment legislation, do not apply in the Channel Islands. The Islands have their own parliamentary system, with Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney and Sark having separate legislatures.

According to the BBC, Woolworths' administrators considered but rejected proposals to make a special payment to Channel Islands staff. The protest has so far generated 2,500 signatures.

Read more about the petition on the BBC website.

UPDATE: According to the BBC website, the petition, with 6,000 signatories, has been handed to Jersey politicians. The Jersey government is considering a one-off scheme to provide redundancy pay for affected employees.
