If you’re suffering from micro-boredom at any point this week, take a minute to acquaint yourself with the words and phrases destined to become part of your working life in 2009.
The New Year was scarcely underway when The Independent published its IoS Buzzword Glossary [external website] - apparently our linguistic means of keeping up with the Joneses (or, at the very least, understanding what they’re saying). So this year prepare to be inundated with perkonomics (extra benefits that firms will present to you to get or retain your business, like O2 offering its customers priority tickets to events at The O2 Arena); and smarten up your telepresence, as this upmarket version of video-conferencing allows life-sized images of participants to be projected into your meeting room.
The above-mentioned micro-boredom is what happens when your spare time is dominated by the constant urge to get out your mobile/BlackBerry and start typing something - anything - just because you can.
Which is why my favourite buzzword-to-be of the year is unplugging - something I wasn’t aware had become obsolete, but which is reported to be coming back in fashion nevertheless. As a reminder for anyone feeling confused, it’s not some cryptic financial term nor does it have any intentional eco-overtones; it is the simple act of putting aside anything with a keypad and having a bit of digital down-time.
