Just can't get the staff?

Then the contingency is not altogether remote that sir has not weighed their emoluments sufficiently.

The 2008 salary survey (PDF format, 96.8K, external website) from Greycoats Placements - a recruitment agency specialising in high-calibre domestic staff - provides a fascinating insight into the rarely-discussed realm of just what a modern Bertie Wooster might have to pay his Jeeves.

Live-in butlers in rural regions command between £23,000 and £28,000 a year on average, while those in the capital can expect to receive between £28,000 and £33,000. Live-out butlers are costlier still, with wages reaching as high as £35,000 (rural) and £40,000 (London).

Full-time chauffeurs are a different proposition entirely, with annual salaries starting at £30,000 for both London and rural models.

The survey additionally provides useful guidance notes, including whether one ought to provide one's help with a uniform (one ought - or a suit allowance for a chauffeur) and whether one ought to expect live-in staff to pay utility bills (one really oughtn't).
